Starting February 2026, the UK introduces the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for visa-exempt visitors. This new digital system represents a significant change in how travelers from friendly nations will enter the UK.

What is the ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a digital permission to travel to the UK for short stays. It is not a visa but a pre-travel authorization similar to systems used by the United States (ESTA) and Canada (eTA).

Who Needs an ETA?

Travelers from visa-exempt countries who are visiting the UK for:

  • Tourism and leisure (up to 6 months)
  • Business meetings (up to 6 months)
  • Short-term study (up to 6 months)
  • Transit through the UK

How to Apply

The ETA application process is straightforward:

  1. Complete the online application form
  2. Provide passport details and travel information
  3. Pay the application fee
  4. Receive your ETA electronically (typically within 72 hours)

Validity and Duration

  • Each ETA is valid for multiple entries over 2 years
  • Each stay can be up to 6 months
  • The ETA is linked to your passport

Important Notes

  • Apply at least 72 hours before travel
  • An ETA does not guarantee entry; border officials make final decisions
  • You still need a visa for work, study over 6 months, or settlement
